Next generation fiber glass and coatings enable new options for wind energy
By going outside the chemical boundaries of e-glass, PPG developed INNOFIBER® fiber glass. It provides up to 15 percent higher tensile modulus performance,particularly in combination with the proprietary sizing chemistry of PPG’s HYBON® glass roving. They enable the production of longer, stronger, lightweight blades and massive, multiple-megawatt wind turbines that can signifi cantly lower the cost of offshore wind energy. To protect their splash zones and foundations, our advanced protective coatings such as SIGMASHIELD™ 1200 coating guard against corrosive saltwater, ultraviolet light, and other harsh offshore conditions.
PPG researchers are helping to facilitate the efficient use of energy by advancing ultraviolet (UV) and electron beam (EB) technologies used for curing today’s highperformance polymer coatings. Both forms of energy interact directly with the components of the coating as a catalyst to form a polymer bond that offers high strength, low cost and environmental friendliness – extremely fast. PPG’s UV/EB coatings meet regulatory guidelines for low VOC and hazardous air pollutant (HAP) content. PPG conducts UV/EB curing research and manufacturing at several facilities in the United States and France.
