Supplier Diversity

At PPG, we believe that our company and communities benefit when we provide equal opportunities for diverse suppliers to compete for our business.  As such, we actively seek small businesses and businesses owned by veterans, minorities, members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, and women who provide quality products and services at competitive prices.

Our suppliers are our business partners, and it is important that these partnerships reflect the communities where we live, work and serve.

Companies wishing to apply with a diverse status must meet the criteria of the respective certifying bodies.  These agencies are the National Veteran Business Development Council (NVBDC), the U.S. department of Veteran affairs Center for Verification & Evaluation (CVE) at vet.gov, the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) or their regional affiliates, the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the Women Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) and its’ affiliates or the U.S. Small Business Administration.   For certain municipal contracts, vendors must meet their standards as well.  Proof of certification or an affidavit for self-declared diverse companies are required.

How The Program Works
After benchmarking and performing a gap analysis on our supplier diversity program, we created the One PPG Supplier Diversity Program to consolidate our individual business efforts into a single global program.

Rolled out in 2018, the program is built on four pillars:
  • Infrastructure refresh;
  • Resources to drive results and behaviors;
  • Operationalizing key supplier diversity elements; and
  • Effective outreach.
Key achievements in 2018 included developing management metrics, hiring a full-time supplier diversity lead, formalizing a champion network, embedding diverse suppliers into our strategic sourcing process, and participating in national supplier diversity conferences and regional matchmaking events.

PPG’s supplier diversity office seeks diverse suppliers through involvement with certifying agencies, participation in trade shows and matchmaking events and utilization of diverse supplier directories.

Potential suppliers may be asked to participate in reverse auctions, requests for quotes, request for proposals and other forms of purchases.  Suppliers are considered based on capabilities match.
Once the company capability profile is fully completed and entered into the system, the profile will be available online to the PPG buying community.  A company will be contacted only if their capability profile matches a current need being quoted.  Please note that an incomplete profile (inclusive of certification documentation) may hinder capability searches.
