PPG Foundation supports spectrum analysis technology at Fairfield Community High School

MOUNT VERNON, Ill., March 6, 2017 – Materials Manager Dan Prible of the PPG industrial coatings plant in Mount Vernon, Illinois, sponsored a PPG Foundation grant for nearly $1,000 to support the purchase of spectrum analysis kits that will benefit 90 chemistry students at Fairfield Community High School. Teacher Brent Sutton requested the funding for two kits that enable students to see the reactions of excited atoms.

The experiments will increase students’ understanding of energy wavelengths and electron movement. Here, Shaelyn Shreve watches as Savannah Barnhart and Ryan Walter use diffraction gratings to observe the emission spectra pattern.

Prible sponsored the grant through the foundation’s Innovative Classroom Grants program, which encourages PPG employees to connect with their communities by supporting educational initiatives. “The PPG Foundation helps employees partner with local schools by supporting projects like this one that focus on science, and I hope these experiments inspire students to be more interested in pursuing science-related careers,” Prible said.
