PPG Foundation grant helps New Hope kindergarten students explore careers

MOUNT VERNON, Ill., JUNE 21, 2017 – The PPG industrial coatings plant in Mount Vernon, Illinois, recently helped New Hope School in nearby Fairfield secure a $1,000 Innovative Classroom Grant from the PPG Foundation to fund career exploration projects related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Dan Prible, materials manager at the Mount Vernon plant, sponsored the grant for Debbie Webb, a kindergarten teacher at the school.

Webb created a number of projects to encourage students to become innovative thinkers by working with their peers to imagine, invent and problem-solve. The projects included researching, designing or operating a flower shop, grocery store, bowling alley, pizza shop and airport.  Students working in the grocery store, for example, learned the math and science skills required by produce and dry goods stockers, checkout clerks, bakers, delicatessen artists and shoppers.
“I hope these projects help students understand that scientists and technicians are not the only careers that require knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math concepts in the everyday workplace,” said Prible.
