While the legendary Lennon-McCartney songwriting team relied on lyrics and melodies to paint strawberry fields and yellow submarines, artist Shannon MacDonald relies on PPG’s waterborne Envirobase High Performance system to create paintings of the Beatles.

The award-winning New Jersey airbrush artist – best known simply  as “Shannon” – was dubbed the “World’s Greatest Beatles Artist” by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, England, in 1998. Envirobase High Performance coatings are favored by many auto refinishers for lowering VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions, which improves air quality. Shannon’s first major project using Envirobase High Performance coatings was the creation of individual black-and-white portraits of John, Paul, George and Ringo.

“By the time I finished those paintings,” Shannon said, “I was in love with Envirobase High Performance coatings.” The product enables her to get “amazing detail, like skin pores and flyaways on hair.” One of her primary PPG contacts is Paul Stoll, manager of PPG’s automotive refinish training center in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

“When she asked what I thought about using Envirobase coatings on canvas, I was really excited,” Stoll said. “She’s eager to learn about our products and application techniques. Her great reputation and success opens the doors for other artists to use our products. It’s another niche for our product line.”
